Obituary for Lloyd Scott Daniels
Lloyd Scott Daniels, of Mont Vernon, passed away peacefully at his home on June 26, 2018, in the loving presence of his wife and children, following a year and a half battle with brain cancer. He was 63 years young.
Lloyd, a lifelong New Hampshire resident, was born in Peterborough, NH, on July 3, 1954, to Winston "Pappy" and Elizabeth “Betty” (née Young) Daniels. He was the youngest of four siblings—minutes younger than his twin sister. Lloyd spent the first few years of his life in Francestown. Before he started first grade, his family moved to Milford, where he graduated from Milford Area Senior High (MASH) in 1972. He met the love of his life, Paula (née Zdanowicz) in 1975, they married in 1979, and they bought a home together in Mont Vernon in 1983. There, they raised two children, Bradley “Brad” (born 1986) and Brittany (born 1989). Throughout his life, Lloyd was a loving and devoted husband, father, godfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend.
For the past 15+ years, Lloyd worked at S.P. Richards Company in Nashua as a checker-packer, until he fell suddenly ill. Lloyd was previously a proud employee of the Coca Cola Company for many years until the closing of its Nashua plant.
Lloyd was a lover of nearly all genres of music and created a collection of mix tapes, CDs, and playlists that numbered in the thousands. Family members and friends often received personally curated song compilations as gifts. He also loved reading, Halloween, craft beer, coaching his kids’ baseball teams, riding his motorcycle, going out for breakfast, and taking family trips. He particularly enjoyed his trip to Ireland in 2013 with his wife and children, as well as his vacations to several Caribbean islands with his wife in the 1980s. Lloyd also cherished his annual trips with his siblings and father exploring history and visiting baseball parks across the country. After his father passed away in 2014, he and his siblings continued to enjoy spending time together to keep up the family tradition. As a lifelong Boston and New England sports fan, he endured many up and down seasons, but he considered the 2001 Patriots’ Cinderella Super Bowl and the 2004 Red Sox’s breaking of the Curse of the Bambino to be among the most memorable and rewarding. He relished and never shied away from a good debate about politics. His dry sense of humor was legendary to those who knew him well – so much so that those who did not know him as well were often unsure when he was joking. At the same time, he never outgrew his childhood love of the Three Stooges. Lloyd was also dutiful and prided himself on maintaining his home and property, occasionally resulting in his kids poking fun at him for thinking up home improvement projects that of course required their assistance. He could be a stoic and stubborn New Englander, but he was also warm and took a sincere interest in getting to know others.
In January 2017, Lloyd was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor after suffering a sudden seizure at work. He had rapidly developed a rare form of cancer—glioblastoma—which is extremely aggressive, fast-growing, not routinely tested for, and incurable by current medicine. He fought his disease bravely, but after chemotherapy, radiation, and two brain surgeries, he eventually succumbed on a rapid timeline that is sadly standard for glioblastoma patients.
Lloyd believed strongly that death with dignity, also known as assisted death, should be an option under appropriate circumstances. In his honor, his wife and children will be supporting the push for its legalization in New Hampshire.
He is survived by his wife Paula Daniels, son Brad Daniels (Ghenet), daughter Brittany Daniels, older sister Peggy “Peg” Montgomery (Gary), older brother Kenneth “Ken” Daniels (Candy), twin sister Lynn Dion (Bob), as well as many beloved cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, goddaughter, and friends. He is missed dearly by all.
A Celebration of Life in Lloyd’s honor will be held at the Community Church of New Boston (2 Meetinghouse Hill Road, New Boston, NH 03070) on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 11:30 A.M. Lunch will follow the celebration.
In lieu of flowers or gifts of remembrance, his family requests that donations be made to the Glioblastoma Foundation (glioblastomafoundation.org) to help raise awareness of and find a cure for this under-researched and deadly form of cancer. Please leave Lloyd’s name in the message field when donating.
