Obituary for Sandra M. Hughes
Sandra “Sandy” (Mols) Hughes crossed the threshold peacefully on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at her home in Wilton, NH after a long battle with cancer. Born July 5, 1937 in Ithaca, NY she was the oldest of six children of the late Herbert Mols and Ruth (Cass) Mols.
Following WWII, her parents moved to Buffalo, NY where her father taught at Park School. Sandy attended Elmira College then graduated from University of Buffalo. A natural caregiver and teacher, Sandy taught young children in several different schools in the United States and abroad. In 1971 she married Cary Hughes and lived in Virginia until 1980 when they moved to Wilton, NH where they joined the faculty and staff at High Mowing School. Sandy and her husband Cary were house parents to a group of middle school students for the 1980-81 schoolyear. Sandy then served as the school Registrar and receptionist for twenty years until she retired in 2001.
Each word, each sentence that her children and husband read from those that she had touched throughout her long life, gave us the opportunity to slowly weave a tapestry of her greatest attributes... kind, joyful, gentle, good listener, magical, beautiful, huge heart, loving, sweet, bright, honest, funny, patient, angelic, nurturing, second mother, aunt, sister, friend, mother, grandmother and, not least of all, devoted wife.
She is survived by her children, Karl Wilson, Daniel Hughes and Kristin Hughes, two brothers and two sisters and many grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
It was Sandy's wish to be cremated. Due to the pandemic we mutually decided to have a memorial service at a time in the future when her far-flung family and friends can attend.
